Notes on A Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church

Johann Eck, was born Johann Maier in 1486 at Eck (Now Egg) in Swabia, Germany. He died in Ingolstadt in 1543. Studied in Heidelberg, T�bigen, Cologne and Freiburg in Breisgau. He taught at Ingolstadt from 1510-1543. At first, he supported Luther, but quickly turned against him. After facing Luther at the Leipzig debate, Eck took the lead in opposing the reformer. He sought the Pope's condemnation of Luther and is credited with much of the language of Pope Leo the Tenth's Exsurge Domine. He was the legate who promulgated the bull threatening Luther's excommunicated. Eck was a principal author of the Papal Confutation.
