Notes on A Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church

Luther refers to the Greek myth of Sisyphus, King of Corinth. In this myth, Sisyphus saw Zeus carry off the beautiful woman, Aegina, and told his father, Aeolus, King of Thessaly, about it. Zeus punished Sisyphus by condemning him to Tatarus, where he was to spend eternity rolling a stone up a hill, which, once it reached the summit, always rolls back down again.
